gekkou

Moonbow

furimuite kieru egao ga tomadou hodo hakanaku yoru ni koboreru

If I turn away from you, your smile will wane
I watch it surface in the night
that seems so short
I can barely comprehend it

machi wo miorosu oka made futari aruite
katamuku tsuki no akari de sotto mi wo atatameta

Together, we headed to the hill overlooking town
Warmed by the gentle light of the setting moon

usui tsubasa de hoshikuzu ni made chikazukeru
bokura no tsumasaki wo chijou ni modoshite

On threadbare wings, we'll climb high enough
to even become stars in the sky
Then, let our tiptoes touch down
on the surface of the Earth once again

fukinukeru kaze no tsumetasa wa netsu mo hibi mo ubaisatteku no?
mizu no nai puuru ni tatteru sosogareru kisetsu wo matteru

The bitter winds cut right through me
Perhaps their chill is cruel enough
to sweep away your warmth
and even the time we passed...
Gusts of air fill an empty pool
as I await the season where the deluge will pour in

mune no kaidan zutto kishindeiru kara
kowasanu you ni kizukarenu you ni nobaritsuzukeyou

The staircase in my heart
has always been creaky
So as you climb with me
take care not to cause damage
and be sure to go unseen

kokoro igai nani mo motazu ni deatta kara surechigatta kara
yume wo miteta yo suna no fune de kimi to ikitsuku tooi basho

With nothing but my heart
I crossed paths with you
then parted just the same
Once I had a dream
where we sailed across the sands,
our boat carrying us to far-flung places

aoku someru hikari fureta kimi ga miseta maboroshi
ai to ienai mama yoru no fuchi wo hirugaeru

Bathed in the pale moonlight,
I saw you cast your shadow
Still unwilling to call this love
Your image shimmers at the edge of the night

koi nara yurenaide ai nara tsuyoku dakikaesanaide
niwaka ni mayoikonda shizuka no umi ni nagasareru

If this is romance, then swear you'll stay true
If this is love, then be gentle
when you return my embrace
Suddenly, I find myself lost
swept away by the waves
of the sea of tranquility

dareka wo fukaku omou koto wa ashita sae mo koroshiteyuku you
karada no oku ga mezameteku yo tada hoshii no wa nami no oto

To feel so deeply for someone
will give you reason to try and halt time itself
Though I begin to regain conscisousness
I long for nothing but the sound of waves

aoku sugiru toki ni fureta kimi no honoo wo miteru
ai to ienai mama iro wo kaeru setsunasa wo

We were blissfully unaware of the flow of time
And in my mind's eye,
I'm still watching the dance of your flames
Still unwilling to call this love
With the kind of pain that shifts the colour of the light

hanareru ayamachi mo namida ga egaku azayaka na yami mo
subete wa sarawareteku tsuki ga futari wo yurushiteku

But I let that all go, as well as our wrongs
and my tears that paint the darkness
in the full spectrum of light
The moon will wash it all away
and forgive us both

furimuite kieru egao ga tomadou hodo hakanaku yoru ni koboreta

If I turn away from you, your smile will wane
I watched it surface in the night
that seemed so short
I could barely comprehend it

Notes

  1. kaze (winds) in fukinukeru kaze no... is written しっぷう (shippuu, gale winds).
  2. あお (aoku) is used at the beginning of both choruses, and has multiple meanings. In aoku someru hikari it's referring to the pale colour of the moonlight, whereas in aoku sugiru toki ni it can be read as alluding to youth/innocence. As discussed in more detail in previous songs, there is also the literal blue meaning of あお.
  3. hikari (light) in aoku someru hikari is written as げっこう (gekkou, moonlight). gekkou is also the standard reading for げっこう (moonbow, lunar rainbow), the song's title.
  4. There is a bit of subtle wordplay in the two choruses using two verbs that are homophones: れる (to touch, feel) and れる (to shake, waver), which are both read fureru. They're used in the lines fureta kimi ga miseta maboroshi and fureta kimi no honoo wo miteru respectively.
Again, difficult to pull off the same thing in English... maybe I snuck an I/eye combo in there if you look reaaaally hard... Incidentally, Akio Inoue uses this same kind of wordplay in her lyrics for early TMR singles like HIGH PRESSURE and HOT LIMIT.
  5. Sea of tranquility is an allusion to Mare Tranquillitatis, which is known as しずかのうみ (shizuka no umi) in Japanese.
  6. In karada no oku ga mezameteku yo, からだ (karada) is a less common way of writing からだ (karada, body). The same kanji can also be read as むくろ mukuro (corpse).
  7. In iro wo kaeru setsunasa wo, iro (colour) is written さいこう (saikou, coloured light).
